Summer 2019 Internship Program

Are you a pre-med, pre-PA, or other student interested in healthcare?

Apply for a 2019 summer internship at Rheumatology Specialists of Connecticut! Rheumatology Specialists is a private rheumatology practice located in South Windsor, CT and Farmington, CT. During this internship you will work closely with Dr. Timothy Quan, a Yale-trained physician dedicated to education. Dr. Quan is a clinical professor for Yale School of Medicine, UConn School of Medicine, and the PA program at Quinnipiac, as well as other programs. You will also have the opportunity to work closely with our APRN and PA-C. Internship will include working directly with patients, taking on the role of a medical assistant and scribe, learning how to take a medical history, observing a physician’s physical exam, and learning about insurances and prior authorizations. You will learn extensively about autoimmune diseases and the musculoskeletal system. This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into the U.S. healthcare system, work on the EHR system EPIC, interact with patients of the local community, and be part of our healthcare team! Past and current medical assistants and scribes of our office have been accepted into various medical schools and PA programs and found their work here to be invaluable. This is an unpaid internship with minimal commitment of 25 hours per week for 10 weeks. Lunch included! All grade levels are welcome to apply. Interviews will take place in March. Final decisions will be made in April. Application due March 1, 2019. Requirements: current undergraduate student, interest in healthcare, professional and committed, team player. Preferred Requirements: coursework in immunology and anatomy and physiology, scribe experience.

Job responsibilities

  • Accompany provider(s) into patient examination room to accurately and efficiently document the encounter.

  • Exhibit proficiency in medical terminology and billing & coding knowledge in all documentation.

  • Document the time and reasoning for, patient orders including lab tests, radiology tests and medications.

  • Document any procedures performed by provider(s).

  • Make and receive phone calls on behalf of provider(s).

  • Inform provider(s) when diagnostic studies are completed, prepare for review, and document in EMR.

  • Multi-task efficiently and effectively as required.

  • Work under pressure, within time constraints.  Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation.

  • Exhibit excellent listening skills.

  • Concentrate on the needs of the provider(s) throughout entire shift.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements/Preferences

  • Typing Skills – must be able to type accurately at 45 wpm +

  • Computer Competency – skilled at operating computers and troubleshooting when necessary

  • Ability to work in a progressive, team-oriented environment

  • Ability to problem solve in stressful situations pertaining to patient care

Additional Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Maintain professional appearance (uniform as specified) and conduct at all times.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with provider(s), staff and management.

  • Be a positive, helpful point of contact for our patients

  • Check insurance eligibility, coverage and benefits.

  • Scanning of charts and medical documents

General Educational Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college/university or be a recent graduate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing and walking for long periods of time, up to 100% of shift.

  • Lifting up to 40 pounds.

  • Constant typing and data entry with real time auditory discrimination from dictation.
